In American culture, sleep and rest in general can be treated in very contradicting ways. On the one hand, expressing a sense of tiredness and a need for rest has become a cultural norm. While on the other, it has become a cynical type of status symbol to be so busy that having time for rest must mean someone isn't working hard enough. But between both of the cultural attitudes lies one similar problem -- sleep deprivation.

This episode explores the basics on sleep in culture especially for those within the 18-24 year-old age range. Getting the best sleep is important for the best quality of life according to Shawna Haislet a Certified Health Education Specialist and Health Promotion Coordinator at the University of Northern Iowa. She discusses best practices for sleep, dispels common misconceptions and challenges the prevailing attitudes people have about sleep.
