When you're running a small business, sometimes there

0:02

are no words. Ha ha!

0:04

Yes! Ah! Woo hoo!

0:08

But if you're looking to protect your small business,

0:11

then there are definitely words that can help. Like

0:14

a good neighbor, State Farm is there. And

0:17

just like that, a State Farm agent can be there to

0:19

help you choose the coverage that fits your needs. Whether

0:22

your small business is growing or brand new, your State

0:24

Farm agent is there to help. On the phone

0:27

or in person, like a good neighbor,

0:29

State Farm is there. Or

0:56

you get your podcasts. Published

0:58

by Capital Client Group, Inc. Over

1:04

100,000 people in America

1:06

are currently waiting on a life-saving

1:08

organ transplant. And people often

1:11

end up waiting for years. They get

1:13

weaker, they get sicker. 17

1:16

people die every day on the waiting list

1:18

because there just aren't enough extra organs to

1:21

go around. But there

1:23

are some possible solutions. My

1:26

colleague, Dylan Matthews, donated his kidney to

1:28

a stranger. He wants more people

1:30

to donate theirs. Scientists

1:32

also have some ideas. Building

1:34

robot hearts. Growing lungs.

1:38

Still, none of these has fundamentally

1:40

changed the organ shortage. Which

1:43

is a persistent problem in almost

1:45

every country. But there

1:48

could be another way forward. An

1:50

experimental procedure that is giving hope to people

1:52

who need organ transplant. To become the first

1:54

person in the world to get a heart

1:57

transplant from a genetically modified pig. for

4:00

the fact that pig hearts are just

4:02

weirder or more foreign than human hearts,

4:05

like the heart is the same, it can

4:07

do the same thing? Yes, the heart

4:10

is basically the same, and that's actually why

4:12

they have decided to use pigs as

4:14

kind of the like main animal

4:16

to transplant, because hearts, livers, they're

4:18

approximately the same size as ours,

4:21

and they pretty much look the same,

4:23

and they function the same. Interesting. And

4:25

in the last few years, there's been

4:27

a lot of progress on xenotransplantation, which

4:29

is the transplanting of animal organs

4:31

in a people. So there

4:33

have been five total operations where living

4:36

people have gotten these pig

4:38

organ transplants. There's been

4:40

two hearts and two kidneys all in the

4:42

US, and then one liver transplanted in China.

4:45

And I wanted to learn

4:47

a bit more about these cases, like what we've

4:49

learned from them. And so I spoke

4:52

to one of the surgeons who did the very

4:54

first pig heart transplant to learn more about what

4:56

happened. What the first pig heart

4:58

transplant? Yeah, and it was only a

5:00

few years ago. So his name is Dr.

5:02

Mohammad Mohoudin, and he's a

5:05

surgeon at the University of Maryland and

5:07

the director of the cardiac xenotransplantation program

5:09

there. Such a cool title. Yeah.

5:12

And he hopes that one day

5:14

pig transplants can work just as well

5:17

and maybe even better than human ones.

5:19

If we get to that stage, the

5:21

patient may choose a pig heart over

5:23

a human heart. I mean, you can

5:25

call me crazy, but this is what

5:27

I believe. But I was

5:30

also curious, what made him and his

5:32

team so confident to do this first

5:34

pig heart operation, considering it's

5:36

never been done before, it's never been done

5:38

successfully. What did he say? Basically,

5:41

it has to do with animal experiments. Like

5:45

before these cases of transplanting pig

5:47

organs into people, there's actually been

5:49

a lot of research on doing

5:51

xenotransplants between different other

5:53

animal species. And that's the kind of work

5:55

that Mohammad's been doing for the past few

5:57

decades. So like

5:59

putting...
