Firstly, the marketing that bills this as a first of its kind feature length audio movie is easily disproven. No, this show is not even close to being the first of anything. For example, Cerberus Rex by Sci-Fi Presents was a feature length audio movie released in 2017 and was nominated for a Webby Award. Maybe Two-Up will invent a wheel or fire next and say that they are the first ones to do so.Shipworm itself is a thematically hollow ride, a bunch of ideas that never comes together. If it’s meant to be an exploration of mental illness, then it is not set up to cover the topic thoughtfully. Mental illness is exploited as a plot engine here, and the depiction is stereotypically Hollywood-superficial. If Shipworm is meant to be a character study, then the final scene completely undercuts the protagonist’s comments about taking responsibility for some pretty horrific actions. For the sake of a cheap “Or is it” twist, the writers sacrificed any thematic coherence here. That said, the actors are fantastic and they do what they can with the muddled script.
