Loved this take on the 1998 Home Run Derby between McGwire and Sosa. brought millions of new eyeballs to MLB, but they weren't fans of the game. Many hard-core fans were irritated by the presence of so many ignoramuses around baseball. They were just counting home runs, and didn't appear to understand anything else about this game we love. This is a story about players breaking the rules in order to improve their own performance on the field of play. Compare this to the 1919 Black Sox scandal, where players took bribes to lose games (a World Series, no less!) by performing below their abilities. THAT scandal damaged the game because fans became suspicious, with good reason, that a player striking out, or committing an error might be doing it on purpose, to enrich himself.
