L’obiettivo principale del Corso è quello di fornire una visione complessiva della biologia delle cellule staminali e delle prospettive terapeutiche della terapia cellulare. Nella prima parte del Corso vengono definite le proprietà biologiche delle diverse popolazioni di cellule staminali, con particolare riferimento alle cellule staminali embrionali, a quelle del cordone ombelicale, a quelle dell’adulto, nonché al processo della clonazione animale e dell'ottenimento della staminalità mediante trasferimento genico (cellule iPs). Nella seconda parte del Corso sono invece discussi in maniera critica i principali approcci di terapia cellulare ad oggi proposti e/o realizzati per la terapia delle malattie cardiovascolari (cellule staminali di midollo osseo, mioblasti scheletrici, cellule staminali cardiache), delle malattie neurodegenerative (cellule embrionali e neuroni fetali, cellule staminali neurali, progenitori degli oligodendrociti) e del diabete (cellule staminali embrionali, isole pancreatiche). Infine vengono presentati alcuni promettenti approcci di ingegneria tessutale per la rigenerazione di organi e tessuti.
