Jesus is surrounded by religious people who lack faith but expect God to be on their side. He walks into the region of Tyre and Sidon and is confronted by a Canaanite woman. Jesus has every right to ignore her and send her away empty-handed. In fact, that's what his disciples wanted him to do. Jesus' conversation with this pagan woman shows that God doesn't judge by outward appearances, but "judges righteously, [and] tests the heart and mind..." (Jeremiah 11:20).
