Season 1 was close to a masterpiece, deftly tackling minefield topics like rape and mental illness with complex and authentic characters and a wry sense of humor. In particular, the protagonist, Elaine, is well realized and captures all the things I simultaneously hate and admire about young adults coming into their own. Season 2 was not as successful, as formerly nuanced characters got flattened out, an omnipowerful multitool of a character was brought into shortcut through logistical obstacles, and the formerly down-to-earth plot got Hollywoodized. Nevertheless, in a field just drowning in ripoffs of Serial or The Black Tapes, this is an ambitious authentic rarity that you should listen to.
