Welcome to Designer Discussions

0:02

with Jason Maria and Miriam

0:04

. Today we are going to talk

0:07

about the power of networking . Welcome

0:11

to the Designer Discussions podcast

0:13

with Jason Maria

0:16

and Miriam Tune

0:18

in each week , where we talk about

0:20

marketing , pr and business advice

0:22

for design professionals . Talk about marketing , PR and business advice

0:24

for design professionals .

0:25

This is a good topic , miriam , because

0:27

oftentimes , as small business owners , we're

0:29

often in our own

0:31

little world and one of the best

0:34

ways to grow your business

0:36

is to network . You

0:43

hear this a lot , but oftentimes people think that they have to go out to a meeting and meet people

0:45

. We don't have Maria on today , but she had talked about how she's not

0:48

very social , but there

0:50

are ways that you can network without having to

0:52

be out there . One of the ways

0:54

that we all know about is social media . That's

0:57

one of the ways that we all met . Actually

0:59

, we had met on LinkedIn and

1:01

just by having conversations

1:03

and talking we had met

1:06

and then we connected . We saw

1:08

that we had a lot of things in common and then

1:10

from there we have built a business

1:12

relationship . So that's just one

1:15

way to network where you don't have to be out

1:17

there meeting others if you have

1:20

social anxiety , so obviously

1:23

you want to . At the heart of whatever

1:26

it is , you want to be involved in

1:28

your local groups , whether

1:30

that be ASID , whether that be

1:32

NKBA , aia

1:34

, nari , any of

1:37

the organizations that are

1:39

national . They usually have a local chapter

1:41

and all of these

1:43

chapters have either monthly

1:45

meetings , quarterly meetings

1:47

or some type of meetings that you can go

1:50

to and be around like-minded

1:52

people . Oftentimes you'll

1:54

connect with others that you have things

1:57

in common with , and I've

1:59

met others at AIA

2:02

meetings or NKBA meetings

2:04

that we've had things in common and we've actually

2:07

done work together . We've done joint projects

2:09

. From that networking , you

2:11

can also meet at a lot of

2:13

these local or regional

2:15

groups . You'll often have allied

2:18

professions at these meetings as

2:20

well , where , if you listen

2:22

to any of our past episodes about social

2:24

media , you'll hear how we talked

2:27

about if you do like a live

2:29

event or if you do Instagram

2:32

live or whatever , you could tag people . If

2:35

you tag any of the ally

2:37

professions or the vendors that you work with

2:39

and they are either

2:41

on it or they like it , you now open

2:43

yourself up to their audience . That's

2:46

an aspect of networking . So

2:48

networking is just one of those

2:50

aspects that you want to get into

2:52

, especially as a small business owner , because

2:54

business development is a big

2:56

part of growing the business

2:58

and networking is a part of that

3:00

. So we had talked about social media . Networking is a part of that . So we had

3:02

talked about social media . We had talked

3:05

about joining one of your local

3:07

organizations . You can

3:09

also think about networking

3:11

with your immediate audience

3:13

, your family and friends , letting

3:16

them know what you do . Oftentimes

3:18

I'll hear that my uncle

3:21

or my aunt has no idea what I do

3:23

and I'll say

3:25

why do they not know ? Because if they knew

3:27

now , if they meet people that

3:29

may be interested in what you offer

3:32

now , that can help to grow

3:34

your network . So just talking to

3:36

your own family and friends , letting

3:39

them know what you do , how you

3:41

do it , then they're more knowledgeable

3:44

. So if they're out networking or

3:46

if they're out talking to other people

3:48

now , they can refer

3:50

you or reference others to you

3:52

, either as a network , as a client

3:55

or as a as a

3:57

colleague

4:02

. What you do

4:04

is very important , because I

4:06

can't tell you how many times I'm

4:08

at networking events and I'll

4:10

hear people say my brother has

4:13

no idea what I do , my mom has

4:15

no idea what I do , and I'll say why is that

4:17

? Because

4:21

you don't know who they know or who they may come in contact with . And by having them

4:23

know what you do , like I said , it just opens up

4:25

your network . So that's

4:27

just a simple way . Where

4:29

you went to college , that's a simple

4:32

. Oftentimes colleges have networking

4:34

events or if you're

4:36

not living in the same area where

4:39

you went to college . You can get access

4:41

to the directory to see where

4:43

they have local events . So I'm a

4:45

huge Ohio State fan and they are

4:47

always having watch parties . So

4:49

every time I head to a watch party I'm

4:51

meeting new people , even

4:53

though it's not around the business that I

4:55

do , it's around what we all love Ohio

4:58

State football . But in

5:00

that meeting we're talking to

5:02

, and I'm talking to

5:04

, other professionals in other professions

5:07

and we're networking . They're

5:09

learning about what I do , I'm learning about

5:11

what they do . So if I happen to come across

5:13

anybody in that industry , or vice versa

5:16

, it's helping to grow my network

5:18

yeah , I think you covered

5:20

really most

5:22

of the the best ways to network .

5:24

the one I would add is and

5:28

you mentioned a little bit too but go into actual

5:30

events , like for me , whenever I

5:32

go to KBIS or another

5:34

trade show , it's a really

5:36

great way to network with

5:38

other industry professionals , be

5:41

it like in in the construction

5:44

and design industry and , for me , with

5:46

media , because all the media are always

5:48

at the big trade shows . So

5:50

, if you have an audience , if you you

5:52

think about your um target

5:55

audience of of potential

5:57

clients or just people that are important

6:00

um stakeholders in in your

6:02

business , like go and

6:04

attend the events where those people

6:06

are , because there's really nothing

6:09

like networking in

6:11

person . I'm like it's great to

6:13

network on LinkedIn or in Facebook

6:15

groups or wherever

6:17

that may be , but there's really no

6:20

nothing that compares to talking

6:23

to somebody live

6:25

. So I would say , whenever you can

6:28

, you know , try to it's

6:30

it's we're not always motivated to

6:32

do that Um , I think a lot of

6:34

people are not . You know , it's like Jason's

6:36

, like the very outgoing type

6:38

you know , maria is

6:41

the more um less

6:44

likely to put ourself out there . I'm somewhere

6:46

in the middle , you know . So I kind of have to make

6:48

myself do these things , but then when

6:50

I'm there I really enjoy it . So I

6:53

really try to do that as

6:56

much as I can . So I'd definitely say

6:58

live events , don't

7:00

neglect those .

7:02

Miriam just said that I'm more outgoing

7:05

. Honestly , if you knew me in high school , I would not

7:07

have been . I would classify myself

7:09

more of an introvert . Extrovert

7:11

and there's actually a term for

7:13

this Ambivert , ambivert

7:16

, that's what it was , yeah , so where you're

7:18

an introvert at heart , but when you're around

7:20

others or you're more of an extrovert

7:22

and , honestly , that happened because I

7:25

am a business owner and it's

7:27

just a a part of . If you want to grow

7:29

your business , you have to . It's just an aspect

7:31

of networking , so that's how

7:33

that grew out of that . One

7:35

of the things I want to touch on as as

7:38

we end this is that at any

7:40

networking event whether you're

7:42

at a live event , whether you're

7:45

on social media , whether , I had

7:47

said earlier , talking to family or friends

7:49

, you're at one of your college events

7:51

or whatever , whatever it is however

7:54

, you're networking make sure you

7:56

follow up . That's vital because

7:58

you're going to meet a lot of people just

8:00

in life , just by networking

8:03

, just in general . Anyone

8:05

that's interested or has

8:07

interest in what you have to offer

8:09

, interest in what you said , or anybody

8:12

that was referred to you make sure

8:14

you follow up with them . We

8:16

deal with a lot of the clients we

8:18

work with on the marketing side , where

8:20

a lot of deals are lost

8:22

, are on the follow up . So

8:25

making sure you follow up with them

8:27

, whether it's through email , whether it's through

8:29

call , whether it's through X message , however

8:31

it may be , following up is one

8:34

of the best ways that you can

8:36

make sure that connection lasts

8:38

and it turns into a professional

8:41

connection . Whether it turns into a client , whether

8:43

it converts , following up is

8:46

vital . Those are just a

8:48

few things we want to talk about in terms

8:50

of networking , and I wanted to address

8:52

this topic because , as a small business

8:54

owner , like I said , networking

8:57

is vital for you to grow

8:59

, whether it's locally

9:01

, regionally or nationally . Networking

9:04

should be an aspect of what you do

9:06

to grow your business . This is

9:08

just one of the things we want to talk about today

9:10

and we hope to hear and see you all
