Reçu premier à l'École normale supérieure (Ulm), il étudie l'histoire (licence), l'anglais (maîtrise), la philosophie (master à l'université de Cambridge) et les mathématiques : il est diplômé de l'École nationale de la statistique et de l'administration économique (ENSAE). Entré au Conservatoire national supérieur de musique de Paris en 1988, il y obtient huit premiers prix (harmonie, contrepoint, fugue, musique du XXe siècle, orchestration, analyse, accompagnement vocal, improvisation au piano). Reçu premier à l'agrégation d'éducation musicale, il enseigne à l'université Paris IV-Sorbonne (1998-2003) puis à l'École polytechnique (2003-2008). Il a obtenu en 2003 le titre de docteur en musicologie en soutenant une thèse de doctorat portant sur les Études pour piano de György Ligeti. Depuis 2004, il est maître de conférences à l'École normale supérieure (Ulm).
